IN THE DOLLHOUSE

JANE WOOD
My Mother's Spoon
Small textile sculpture. Teaspoon and unravelled synthetic rope.
2.5cm x 11.5cm
£NFS
This spoon belonged to my mother. I can remember her using it to make tea as a child and the small but deep scar on the tip of her right hand thumb as she stirred.
The looped strands create a seam, a spine that binds each thread tightly together along the handle. The knots show visible separations where two strands have been joined, neither end seeming to follow the same direction. The threads appear worn, their colour and shimmer though still visible are faded. The strands form a continuum, a reflection on the unspoken binding of mother and daughter.
I had a tumultuous relationship with my mother as an adult until the onset of her dementia. This piece is an expression of our bond which I have pondered on and reconsidered over the past few years since her death in February 2023.
